Abstract
885,519. Maintaining road-vehicle height constant. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. May 22, 1959 [May 23, 1958], No. 16664/58. Class 108(2). A master height control valve 20 connected to the inlet of height control valves 17 respective to each wheel, and its operating means is disposed on the centre line of the vehicle. This ensures that air will be supplied to the valves 17 only when a change in mean height of the vehicle occurs and not when the vehicle merely rolls. As shown, the valve 20 comprises an operating rod 21 having an indentation 27 which engages a ball 28 under normal inoperative conditions. On a change in mean height, the ball 28 is deflected by the rod 21 to unseat a valve 26. Air can then pass from the pressure line 23 to the lines 22 leading to the valves 17. Normally the lines 22 are connected to atmosphere at 24 by a duct 25a. The movement of the rod 21 may be hydraulically damped. In the case of independent wheel suspensions the axle assemblies at respective sides of the vehicle are connected by a transverse bar to which the rod 21 is connected. The valve 20 may be actuated electromagnetically.
