In an automatic empty and load vacuum brake apparatus for a railway vehicle comprising an empty brake cylinder 3 and a load brake cylinder 4, the apparatus is set for load or empty braking automatically under the control of a vehicle load controlled valve 8 through which a vacuum servomotor 7 operates a valve member 6 in the connection of the load brake cylinder 4 to the train pipe 1 and the load brake cylinder is supplied from the train pipe or vented to atmosphere for cutting in or cutting out the load brake cylinder according to the vehicle load, both the vacuum servomotor 7 operating the valve member 6 and the vacuum chamber 9 of the load brake cylinder 4 being connected to the vehicle load controlled valve 8 so as to be vented therethrough to atmosphere when the brake apparatus is set for empty braking to avoid unnecessary consumption of vacuum in the apparatus. The vacuum chamber 9 of the load brake cylinder 4 is connected with the vehicle load-controlled valve 8 and the latter is connected with the train pipe 1 through a checkvalve 11 preventing flow of air from the train pipe 1 to the valve 8. In the embodiment shown, the brake cylinders of the empty (3) and load (4) vacuum brake apparatus are connected with the train pipe 1 through a direct admission valve 2 and, as shown in Fig. 2, the vacuum servomotor operated cut-in valve 5 is mounted directly between the load brake cylinder and its manually operable release valve 12 and has passages directly connecting passages in the release valve with the load brake cylinder 4 and the vacuum chamber 9 thereof. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus in its empty position wherein the valve 8 vents both the servomotor 7 and vacuum chamber 9 of the load brake cylinder to atmosphere. Specification 849,596 is referred to.
