In an empty load vacuum braking system of the kind wherein each vehicle to be braked is provided with two brake cylinders both operable to apply braking force to the same brake rigging, one of which brake cylinders, termed the " empty " brake cylinder, is operated at each brake application whether the vehicle is loaded or empty and the other of which, herein termed the " load " brake cylinder, is operated only when the vehicle is loaded, comprises a delay valve device connected between the train pipe and the lower chamber of the load brake cylinder, whereby the actuation of the load brake cylinder to apply brake force to the brake blocks in response to a reduction of the degree of vacuum in the train pipe is delayed for a predetermined period. As shown in Fig. 1, the delay device comprises a ball valve 4 the opening of which by the stem 20 of diaphragm follower 18 is made dependent upon the build up of pressure below the diaphragm through a restriction 15 in the pipe 16 leading to the train pipe 1.
