790,037. Hydraulic brakes. GRANT, L. I. H. Jan. 31, 1956 [Feb. 11, 1955], No. 3104/56. Class 103 (1). In an hydraulic braking system for vehicles, two master cylinders 5, 6, operated by a single brake pedal 10, are respectively connected to the front and rear brakes of the vehicle and an equalizing cylinder 17 having a free piston 18 therein is coupled in common to both master cylinders 5 and 6 such that, should leakage occur in one of the hydraulic circuits, the piston 18 will be axially displaced to enable fluid pressure in the remaining master cylinder system to be substantially unaffected. The piston 18 in the equalizing cylinder 17 is provided with circumferential grooves 20 such that when the piston 18 arrives in its fully displaced position in consequence of a partial brake failure the spring loaded plunger 21 will enter one of the grooves 20 and prevent unwanted movement of the piston 8; the movement of the plunger 21 being used to control a switch 22 to illuminate a warning lamp. By using master cylinders of differing diameter and providing the balancing piston with end portions operating in bores of different diameter in the equalizing cylinder, differential braking may be effected, for example, the braking effort applied to the rear wheel brakes may be different from that applied to the front wheel brakes.
