Abstract
887,631. Hydraulic master cylinders. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1960, No. 30054/60. Class 103 (1). In an hydraulic master cylinder and dual piston assembly, particularly for " tandem " or dual system master cylinders used in the hydraulic braking systems for controlling two separate hydraulic circuits, a primary piston 14a creates a pressure in space 15 to actuate a secondary piston 12 which secondary piston operates simultaneously spring-loaded tiltable check valves 4 and 5 controlling communication between the cylinder and hydraulic reservoir in each hydraulic circuit. A spring 19 normally separates primary and secondary pistons and, if the primary chamber 15 should suffer a pressure loss due to a broken pipe, the spring 19 permits abutment of primary and secondary pistons when pressure is applied on the brake pedal. By this means pressure may still be exerted on the secondary circuit through outlet connection 6. Should there be a pressure loss in the secondary chamber 18 due to pipe breakage, the secondary piston 12 will travel into abutment with the end 8 of the secondary chamber and permit pressure build-up in primary chamber 15 to continue to supply pressure fluid to the primary circuit through outlet connection 7.
