Class 103(1) In a master cylinder for an hydraulic braking system, a port b in the forward end of the cylinder leading to a liquid reservoir is controlled by a valve head s mounted with a certain degree of axial freedom on the forward end of a telescopic sleeve l, j, of limited extension which projects forwardly from the piston d within the cylinder and is normally held extended by a spring v. When the piston d of the master cylinder a is advanced to apply hydraulic fluid to the brakes, via the radial port c, the pressure in the cylinder rises and the flanged valve head s moves forwardly so that the sealing member t seats against the end of the cylinder and cuts off communication between the cylinder and the reservoir through passage b. When the brake pedal is released, the piston is returned by the spring v and when the pressure in the cylinder falls below the static head in the reservoir, the valve head s will move rearwardly away from the end of the cylinder and establish communication again with the reservoir. If this does not occur before the piston d approaches its fully retracted position, against the circlip f, the pin p will engage the rear end of the slot q in the valve stem r and will positively move the valve into the open position.
