Abstract
954,422. Hydraulic brakes. GIRLING Ltd. July 25, 1960 [June 4, 1959], No. 19095/59. Heading F2F. In a master cylinder 10 and reservoir 11 assembly for an hydraulic braking system, pressure is applied to liquid in the cylinder 10 by a piston 14, and an actuating rod 22 is coupled to a plunger 18 axially movable relatively to the piston 14, so that when the piston 14 and plunger 18 are fully retracted the pressure space communicates with the reservoir 11 through a passage 12, 16, 17 which is closed by the plunger 18 in its initial forward movement, further movement thereof causing engagement with the pistcn 14 to apply pressure to the liquid in the pressure space. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the piston bore 16 accommodates the spigot of the plunger 18 and has radial grooves 17 extending outwardly at its forward end; the spigot bears a circlip 31 at its forward end, while a sealing washer 32 is mounted in the plunger 18 at the spigot's rear end. In modifications, the plunger slides within a hollow piston provided with a radial bore for the passage of the liquid.
