Abstract
977,268. Master cylinders. GIRLING Ltd. Sept. 12, 1963 [Sept. 29, 1962], No. 37003/62. Heading F2F. In a tandem master cylinder communication between a reservoir and the pressure space between the two pistons is controlled by a valve tiltable by one of the pistons, and communication between the second pressure space and the same or another reservoir is controlled by a valve adapted to engage a seating around a port in the cylinder end wall and coupled to the floating secondary piston. In one embodiment the first valve is tilted by a flange on the main piston when the latter is in the brake off position, while in the embodiment shown tilting is effected by the secondary piston 46. The second valve 34 has an extension 36 entering into a bore 38 in a forward extension of the piston 46 and is retained therein by a clip 41. A spring 49 between the clip and a valve cage 35 maintains the valve extended towards the reservoir port 32 which is thus closed when the pistons move forward on brake application. The invention is applicable to master cylinders having two or more secondary pistons.
