Abstract
1354987 Master cylinders GIRLING Ltd 1 June 1972 [5 June 1971 28 Oct 1971 17 Jan 1972] 19138/71 50296/71 and 2202/72 Heading F2F Two pistons 2, 8 working in a stepped bore of a tandem master cylinder 1 are coupled to limit relative axial movement in both directions and are resiliently urged apart by a single spring 25. Two pressure chambers 16, 15 communicate with reservoirs by way of ports 13, 6 respectively and with wheel cylinders. The brake system is supplied from space 15 with full pressure which for a given pedal pressure increases in the ratio of the difference in areas of the two pistons. If the system supplied from space 15 fails piston 2 moves forward until the head 18 of a stem 17 coupled to piston 8 engages the inner end of a recess 19 after which the two pistons move together. In a further embodiment spring 16 is absent. A modification of this embodiment has the stem screwed in the piston 2, a recess, 78, Fig. 3 (not shown), being provided to receive the head (77) thereof and a washer (79) encircles the stem and is secured to the end of piston (67) by a peened shoulder to trap the head (77) in the recess (78).
