Abstract
732,955. Hydraulic brakes. TEVES, A., TEVES, H., and TEVES, E. A., [trading as TEVES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES., A.]. Oct. 23, 1953 [Jan. 9, 1953], No. 29379/53. Class 103 (1). In order to increase the braking pressure to the brakes of the front axle of a vehicle, a pressure converter 6 is fitted between a pipe connecting the master cylinder 1 and the pipe leading to the brakes of the front axle. As shown in Fig. 1 a braking pipe 2 leads from the master cylinder 1 to the wheel brake cylinders 3, 4 of the rear wheel brakes and a further pipe 5 to the pressure converter 6 and thence by pipe 7 to the wheel brake cylinders 8, 9 of the front wheel brakes. The braking' pressure produced to the master cylinder 1 is transmitted unchanged to the rear wheel brakes but the pressure transmitted to the front wheel brakes is increased by the pressure converter. As shown in Fig. 2, the pressure converter consists of a low-pressure piston 12, movable in the main low-pressure cylinder 10 of the pressure converter, and a high-pressure piston 13 movable in a smaller, high-pressure cylinder 14. - In a boring in the high-pressure piston is a fluid-tight movable pin 15; one end of which is subjected to the pressure in the high-pressure space 16, the other end acting on a pressure-relieving device in the form of a spring-loaded ball-valve 17. If the space 29 behind the low-pressure piston 12 is supplied with pressure liquid from the master cylinder 1 via pipe 5, the piston moves allowing liquid in the low-pressure space 22 to pass through the longitudinal holes 30 in the highpressure piston into the high-pressure space. When the brake shoes contact the brake drum the pressure in the high-pressure space increases and acts through the pin 15 on the ball-valve 17. Similarly, pressure in the low-pressure space 22 acts on the ball valve 17 through the hole 21. When the ball valve opens, the liquid of the low-pressure space 22 no longer passes into the high-pressure space, but flows through poles 23 and 25 into an equalizing vessel 26. This pressure conversion results in the pressure in the high pressure space, and therefore in pipe 7, varying continually in dependence on the foot pressure. The pressure converter may be combined with the master-cylinder to form one unit.
