690,551. Hydraulic brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Nov. 8, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 28901/49. Class 103 (i). In a hydraulic braking system for vehicles, liquid is supplied by a continuously-running pump 27 directly to the working space 13 of a master cylinder 10 by a pipe 25 connected intermediate the master cylinder and the wheel cylinders 24. When the brakes are released, liquid circulates back to the reservoir 29 through a port 21 in a sleeve on the master cylinder piston. When the master cylinder is actuated the port 21 is restricted by a seal 15 so that pressure is built up in the working space and wheel cylinders. A non-return valve 26 on the delivery side of the pump 27 enables the brakes to be applied by pedal effort only if the pump should fail.
