Abstract
754,153. Fluid pressure railway brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and SIMMONS, A. W. March 11, 1955 [April 2, 1954], No. 9803/54. Class 103 (1). In a compressed air brake system for railway vehicles of the kind described in Specification 745,105, wherein an indication is given to the driver when a train approaches an adverse signal, and in which automatic application of the brakes is made at the end of a predetermined interval after the giving of the indication, if the driver does not acknowledge the indication within that interval by operating a cancelling lever, the re-energization of a normally energized electric circuit, which enables the brakes to be released after being thus applied, is arranged to be automatically delayed for a predetermined interval of time. This form of operation is provided by a switch device 8 controlled by a piston having the space 41 above it at the brake pipe pressure in the pipe 22 leading to the emergency application valve 7 and the space 42 below it in connection with a timing reservoir 9 and with pipe 22 by a restriction 35. When the emergency valve 7 is opened, it connects pipe 22 to atmosphere so that due to restriction 35 a pressure differential is created across the piston 38 which tends to maintain the switch 36 open for a predetermined period long enough to permit the train to come to a stop.
