Abstract

743,033. Fluid-pressure railway brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd., and SIMMONS, A. W. Sept. 13, 1954 [Aug. 12, 1953], No. 22194/53. Class 103 (1). In a fluid-pressure brake system for railway vehicles comprising a driver's brake valve 10 and a feed valve 12 connected to a main reservoir by a pipe 14, and wherein an emergency operation of the brakes is brought about, if the train should pass a stop signal, by the de-energization of a circuit controlling a magnet valve 1 governing a valve 3 which vents the brake pipe 4, service applications are brought about, if the driver does not acknowledge an adverse distant signal, by a discharge valve 5 governed by an equalizing reservoir 6, and the de-energization of a second circuit by operation of valve 15 cuts off and releases main reservoir pressure from above the pistons in valves 7 and 9. This enables pressure from the equalizing reservoir 6 to vent to atmosphere through orifice 8 and close the feed from the valve 12 to brake valve 10. The brake pipe 4 is isolated from the apparatus when the isolating cock 21 is shut. Pressure switches 16 and 18 indicate when valves 3 or 7 have operated. In two other arrangements described, the functioning of valves 7 and 9 is governed by separate magnet valves.
