Abstract

886,559. Electro-pneumatic brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. April 26, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 14912/59. Addition to 720,449. Class 103 (1). In an electro-pneumatic brake system as claimed in the parent Specification, wherein a braking system for railway vehicles comprises two control wires and an indication wire extending throughout a train to all vehicles thereof having brakes controlled by the system, there is provided in combination with at least one of the magnet valves 11, 12 or 13, on each vehicle, a relay valve 11a, 12a or 13a, which in dependence on the supply of compressed air thereto by the associated magnet valve performs the function of the magnet valve, and the means for closing the normally open contact 31 in series with the indication wire 16 on each vehicle, is arranged to effect such closure in response to the pressure condition created at the relay valve by energization of the magnet valve. This arrangement enables the integrity of the control lines and magnets to be proved, with only one indication wire, and without the need for contacts operated by the magnet valves. As shown in the Figure, the contact 31 is closed to complete the circuit gap in line 16 by fluid pressure which is operative against the top face of differential piston 18, as the result of movement of which a slide passage 22 may provide communication between a check valve 25 connected to the brake cylinder passage, or with a passage 24 leading to chamber 20 in communication with the main reservoir passage 15.
