Abstract
1,085,081. Fluid pressure brakes. KNORRBREMSE G.m.b.H. Feb. 5, 1965. No. 5225/65. Heading F2F. An electropneumatic compressed-air brake for rail vehicles, comprising a purely pneumatic control device, which includes a triple pressure control valve 5, and an electropneumatic control device 19 connected in parallel through a double check valve 25 with a brake cylinder 27, is characterized in that a shut-off valve 23 is arranged between the constant pressure chamber of the triple valve and an auxiliary reservoir 11 such that the said shut-off valve is opened only during electropneumatic brake operation to allow compressed air to pass to the brake cylinder from the constant pressure chamber in addition to that air drawn from the reservoir. On purely pneumatic brake operation, triple valve 5 connects lines 13 and 24 and compressed air is delivered from the reservoir through valve 25 to the brake cylinder. Solenoid-actuated valves 15 and 17 of the control device 19 are in a de-energized condition and respectively prevent communication between lines 13 and 26 and vent the chamber on the right-hand side of piston 41 in valve 23 to atmosphere through 21 so that valve member 37 remains seated. On electropneumatic brake application, train wires 33, 29 and hence valves 15 and 17 are energized. Compressed air flows from the reservoir through inter-connected lines 13 and 26, and valve 25 to the brake cylinder. Simultaneously, the pressure in line 26 moves piston 41 against spring 43 to unseat member 37 so that the control chamber pressure falls to the same extent as the auxiliary reservoir pressure which has fallen below that pressure in train pipe 1 thereby ensuring triple valve 5 is maintained in the release condition. Sufficient pressure is retained in the reservoir and constant pressure chamber to actuate the brake cylinder in the event of electropneumatic device failure. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the shutoff valve is a solenoid-operated valve which is energized to open from train wire 33.
