Abstract

955,575. Compressed air brakes. KNORR-BREMSE G.m.b.H. Jan. 11, 1962 [Jan. 12, 1961], No. 1121/62. Heading F2F. Control means for electropneumatic compressed air brakes for railway vehicles comprises an electromagnetic valve 23 which, during braking operations, shuts off a control line from a manually actuated driver's valve 13 to a relay valve 5 supervising the pressure in the main air pipe 55 only when the electric brake control system 87, 89 is ready for operation. The valve 23 is in the form of a change-over valve which, when in the position for shutting off the valve 5 from the driver's valve 13, connects the control pipe branch leading to the valve 5 with a pressure regulator 9 which is connected to a compressed air source 1 and pressurizes the valve 5. To cause braking the driver's valve 13 is moved to a braking position whereby the switch 17 is closed so that the valve 23 changes over due to the electromagnet 33 being energized to connect the chambers 31, 29. Regulation pressure is maintained by regulator 9 in pipe line 37 and the reduction in pressure in pipe line 19 produced by the drivers valve causes piston 39 to lift so as to firstly close switch 75 and then switch 77. Brake control valves (not shown) admit compressed air to the brake cylinders and through pipe line 71 to space 67. The pressure loading the piston 69 lowers the piston system 39, 69 until rocking member 73 bears on abutment 81. Switch 77 is thereby opened and a neutral position of the brake is obtained. If an electrical fault occurs the valve 23 changes back to connect chambers 21, 31 so that the driver's valve also lowers the pressure in the cylinder spaces 41, 45. The switch 27 is returned to the release position and the valve 5, by opening valve 57, 61, introduces a fall in pressure corresponding to the braking stage at the time in the main air pipe 55 which by way of the brake control valves pressurises the brake cylinders.
