720,449. Fluid pressure vehicle brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., SIMMONS, A. W., and KERSHAW, J. W. G. Sept. 14, 1953 [Nov. 26, 1952], No. 29938/52. Class 103 (1). In an electro-hydraulic fluid pressure brake system for railway vehicles of the kind comprising lines 5 and 6 extending throughout the length of the train, of which three control coaches are diagrammatically represented at A, B and C, the line 5 controlling a service of holding valves 22 and the line 6 controlling a series of combined inlet and exhaust valves 14, 13, a further line 7 is provided which gives an indication to the driver that the electrical system is operating correctly. As shown, the train is being controlled from position A so that an isolating cock switch 2 is turned to connect the end of line 7 to earth through a buzzer 3. If the system is operating correctly, the brake cylinder pressure will operate to close a switch 8 on each vehicle so that current will pass through a circuit including a line 6, a pressure-operated switch 27, of which there is one at each control position opened only if there is air pressure in the hose coupling as at an intermediate part of the train, isolating cock switch 2 and switches 8. If the holding valve 22 should be open for any reason, the switches 8 will not be closed and the buzzer 3 will be inoperative. The line 7 might be energized through line 5 instead of line 6, but in this case since energization would be nearly continuous, it would be desirable to use a warning lamp in place of the buzzer 3.
