Railway vacuum-brake equipment comprising a brake cylinder 1 having upper and lower chambers 2 and 3, a train pipe 4, an inshot chamber 6 with a timing port 7 and a valve 5 operable by a decrease in the vacuum in the train pipe to connect with the inshot chamber 6 and lower chamber 3 has a conduit 10 connecting the train pipe 4 to the upper chamber 2 which includes a normally closed manual valve 12 to permit said through connection when it is opened. When the train has been brought to rest by operation of the brakes, there will be a vacuum in the chamber 2, but atmosphere pressure in the train pipe and chamber 3 so that the piston will be in the upper part of the chamber 2. Operation of the valve 12 by the handle 13 will admit air to the chamber 2 and allow the piston to fall to release the brakes. Specification 940,879 is referred to.
