Abstract
1,161,299. Brake indicators; fluid pressure brakes. KNORR-BREMSE G.m.b.H. 29 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No. 39551/67. Headings F2E and F2F. Means for indicating the state of application of a compressed air brake, with which a hand brake may be associated, comprises a valve with connections to a compressed air source, to the atmosphere and to the pipe of an indicating means, and which is coupled to the piston of the brake cylinder. Brake control valve 2 controlled by the pressure in a main air pipe 1 controls the admission of air pressure to chamber 3 of brake cylinder 4 from an auxiliary-air reservoir 5. Piston 6 of the brake cylinder 4 carries brake operating rod 7 to which is pivoted a hand brake lever 8. Valve 10, which is connected to the auxiliary air reservoir 5 by pipe 15, to atmosphere by vent 22 and by pipe 16 to the brake application indicator 19 contains a plunger 9 which projects into the brake cylinder chamber 3 so as to be displaceable but sealed. Plunger 9 carries two relatively small pistons 11, 12 and in the "brake off" position shown is constrained by brake piston 6 so that vent 22 is in communication with the brake indicator feed pipe 16: there is then no pressure under the piston 17 of brake indicator 19 and the indicating panel 20 is in the lowered position. When the brake is actuated (Fig. 2, not shown) brake piston 6 is displaced to the left and air pressure behind the piston 12 causes the plunger 9 to move in the same direction, so that piston 12 becomes interposed between vent 22 and brake indicator feed pipe 16. Air under pressure from pipe 15 then enters brake indicator feed pipe 16, forcing piston 17 upwards against the pressure of spring 18, so bringing the indicating panel 20 into a raised position.
