Abstract

1,241,775. Brake indicators. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE AND SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 2 March, 1970 [29 May, 1969], No. 27380/69. Heading F2E. An indicating device for fluid pressure brakes has a first area 13 having a different visual characteristics from a second area 14, the first area being illuminated by a bulb 16 when the brakes are in the "off position" and the second area being illuminated when the stroke of the brake exceeds a predetermined valve indicating that the brakes require adjusting. In the embodiment shown fluid pressure is supplied via a brake valve 6 from a reservoir 5 to a spring applied fluid pressure released actuator 1, the piston 3 of which holds the brakes in the off position, and has a tube 21 the cam face 20 of which actuates a switch 19 thereby illuminating bulb 16 the device being held in the "off position" shown by fluid pressure also acting through a line 8 at a piston 10 in a cylinder 9. When the brakes are moved to their parked position fluid pressure is released from actuator 1 and cylinder 9, the leftward movement of piston 3 causing switch 19 to engage a detent 23 and is thereby deactivated. On subsequent movement leftwardly indicating that the brake requires adjustment switch 19 engages cam face 24 thereby illuminating the lesser opacity area 14. In another embodiment the brakes are fluid pressure operated, area 13 then representing the "off position" where air is released from the brake actuator 1. In an embodiment in which not all brakes are used for parking switches 19 are so arranged that bulb 16 is illuminated by a switch associated with either parking or the remaining brakes.
