Abstract

1,090,655. Air brakes. C. HUBERT. April 21, 1965 [April 21, 1964], No. 16687/65. Heading F2F. A compressed air brake installation for use with railway trains comprises a central control station connected via a train brake pipe to brake devices disposed on the various vehicles, wherein the control station has provision for producing a partial vacuum in the train pipe and each brake device has associated with it a valve connected to the brake pipe and arranged so that, when the train pipe pressure is reduced below atmospheric pressure, connects to the atmosphere the appropriate parts of the brake device to release the brakes. The valve 2, which may also be operated manually to release the brakes, has five conduits 99, 171, 183, 191 and 192 connected respectively to the train brake pipe, atmosphere, the triple valve, the auxiliary reservoir and the brake reservoir. A moderate raising of rod 189 connects chamber 168 to atmosphere by passage 188, venting the brake reservoir. A further raising of member 189 lifts member 187 to vent the auxiliary reservoir. Still further raising of 189 liftt system 170 and applies the disc 181 to its sea- 180, chambers 165 and 166 then communicating. If the brake pipe pressure in 164 is atmos spheric the build-up of pressure in chamber 165, with its restriction 171a, maintains the system 170 in a raised position. When operation of rod 189 ceases the emptying of the auxiliary and brake reservoirs ceases, but the brake cylinder is emptied through the triple valve, and chambers 166, 165. If the pressure in the brake pipe is at operating, i.e. a higher than atmospheric pressure the emptying action ceases when 189 is released. When a partial vacuum is applied to the brake pipe and chamber 164 the system 170 rises and the brake cylinder discharges through passages 176-178 and 171. Disc 181 has closed on seat 180 and the auxiliary and brake reservoirs do not close. In another embodiment of the valve (Fig. 1, not shown) three conduits (99. 108, 116) are provided and are connected to the brake pipe, to atmosphere or to the auxiliary reservoir respectively.
