Abstract
165,560. Westinghouse Brake Co., Ltd., and Leech, K. H. April 12, 1920. Fluid-pressure.-In graduated release for use with triple valves, of the kind in which the release valve is closed by a spring opposed by the train-pipe and brake-cylinder pressures, the train-pipe pressure acts upon the valve through a second spring which is stressed to an extent dependent upon the difference between the trainpipe and brake-cylinder pressures. The brakecylinder exhaust port of the triple valve is connected at 3 so that with this valve in the release position the brake-cylinder pressure acts upon the release valve 6 and also upon a piston 12 which is subject on its other side to the pressure in the train-pipe connected at 2. The effective area of the valve 6 which is subject to the brake-cylinder pressure is greater than that of the piston 12. A spring 11 is interposed between the piston 12 and the stem 5 of the valve 6. An increase of train-pipe pressure after an application of the brakes by increasing the stress of the spring 11 unseats the valve 6 and the brake-cylinder air exhausts through the passages 10 until the pressure in the brake cylinder has fallen sufficiently to permit the spring 8 to re-close ths valve 6. The piston 12 abuts against a projection 14 on the valve stem 5 to unseat the valve 6 to a substantial extent in the final stage of the release operation.
