359,896. Fluid-pressure brakes. ALDRIDGE, T. J., 20, Via Pier Carlo Boggio, Turin, Italy, and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. July 22, 1930, No. 22095. [Class 103 (i).] A pressure-actuated valve for fluid-pressure braking apparatus and particularly applicable to " quick inshot " valves actuated by the pressure in the brake cylinder, is provided with means for protecting the actuating member from pressure due to the flow of the controlled fluid and also with means for increasing, during operation, the capacity of the passage through which fluid is supplied to the actuator. In the form shown in the Figure a ball valve 2 controlling the passage between a passage 5 leading to a triple valve and a passage 7 leading to a brake cylinder is normally held in the open position by a projection 8 on a piston 9 loaded by a spring 10. The piston has a sealing surface 13 contacting with a rib 14 so that outlet pressure admitted through a passage 16 only acts on that portion of the piston surface within the rib. As the piston moves downward against the action of the spring to permit the valve to close, pressure is allowed to act on the whole surface and the tapered projection gradually opens a passage 11 leading to the outlet passage 7. The passage 19 may be connected to an auxiliary brake cylinder. In a modification the passage 16 enters the passage 7 in a direction parallel to the direction of flow to cause an ejector action.
