Abstract

Fluid-pressure. - In a combined straight and automatic system for automobiles, the main reservoir is directly and permanently connected to the automatic pipe and the automatic pipe is connected to the straight air pipe for effecting a straight air application of the brakes; an automatic application being thus effected in the event of leakage of the main reservoir, or, when a straight air application is attempted, of the straight air pipe. The system comprises an automatic pipe 18 connected to the driver's valve 6, to the main reservoir 3 and by way of passages 17, 22, 16 of valves 10, to the auxiliary reservoirs 8. Brake cylinders 5 are normally connected by passage 11, slide valve 20 and passage 13 of the valves 10, with a straight air pipe 15. This pipe can be connected by the driver's valve 6 actuated by a pedal 7, either to atmosphere to exhaust the brake cylinders or to the automatic pipe 18 and thence to the main reservoir 3 to effect a straight air application of the brakes. If, however, the pipe 15 should be injured as by the breakage of the coupling 25 and a straight air application be attempted, the escape of air from the main reservoir and pipe 18 causes the piston 19 of each valve 10 to move to the left to connect the auxiliary reservoirs 8 with the brake cylinders and thus to effect an automatic application of the brakes. Leakage from the main reservoir 3 or from the automatic pipe 18 effects an immediate automatic application of the brakes. Pressure gauges 28 are connected to the main reservoir and to the pipe 15.
