Abstract

Fluid-pressure.-In a graduated release valve, the train-pipe and brake-cylinder pressures are balanced against an adjustable spring through the intermediary of a lever fulcrumed at one end to a fixed point. The train-pipe pressure acts through the passage 5 on a piston 3, and the brake-cylinder exhaust from the triple valve through a passage 11 on the valve 9. The piston 3 and valve 9 bear upon a lever 7 fulcrumed at 8, against the opposite side of which bears an adjustable spring device 17. Upon an increase in train-pipe pressure for a graduated release of the brakes, the valve 9 is moved towards the right to allow the brake cylinder exhaust to escape through the port 16 until the brake cylinder pressure has been reduced to such an extent that the spring device 17 can re-close the valve 9. A portion of the resistance to the movement of the valve 9 is normally furnished by the stiffness of the diaphragm 4. Should the diaphragm crack, a larger area of the piston 3 is subjected to trainpipe pressure, and the piston is moved on to its seat so that escape of air from the train-pipe is avoided.
