Abstract

325,912. Consolidated Brake & Engineering Co., Ltd., and Palmer, B. W. Dec. 13, 1928. Fluid-pressure; hand or foot actuation.-In brake apparatus comprising two independent brakes each operating a separate set of shoes, one brake being operated by hand or foot, and the other by suction or compressed air, the control valve 8 of the air-brake is operatively connected to the pedal or lever through the medium of a normally stressed spring 24 so that the valve is actuated immediately movement is given to the lever or pedal of the hand or foot actuated brake without causing an actuation of the latter, the spring being further stressed before the manual or foot brake can be applied. The levers 3, 3, 7, 7, of the fluid-pressure brakes are actuated by pistons or diaphrams 6, 6, 5, 5, connected through the control valve 8 to a vacuum cylinder 9, the vacuum of which is maintained by the induction of the engine 10 through a non-return valve 11. The spindle 23 of the valve 8 is connected to the rod 16 of the brake pedal 12 through a spring 24 as described in Specification 320,739. The spring 24 is stressed approximately to the force tending to close the valve 8. The rod 17 of the hand-brake 13 and the rod 16 of the foot-pedal 12 are connected through elongated slots to pins on arms 15, 14 secured on a cross-shaft 18, the arm 14 being connected by a rod 19 to an arm 20 on a cross-shaft 21 by which the Levers 4, 4 of the hand or foot brakes are operated. The first part of the movement of the pedal 12, by which the fluid-pressure brake is operated, only takes up the slack in the brake rigging and brake shoes operated by the hand or foot brakes. In this part of the movement the valve for effecting the release of the brakes is closed and the spring 24 moves bodily with the rod 23 without being stressed. Further movement opens progressively the brake application valve and stresses the spring 24 until equilibrium is reached between the brake cylinder pressure and the pressure of the spring whereupon the brake application valve automatically closes and holds the brakes on. In the case of a compressed air brake the control valve may be as shown in Specification 306,635.
