Abstract
399,190. Fluid-pressure brakes. AVERY, W. L., Blue House, Thorley, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. Jan. 27, 1932, No. 2470. [Class 103 (i).] Hydraulic brake mechanism particularly for aircraft and other vehicles which permits of the simultaneous application of the wheel brakes on the two sides of the vehicle by a handlever or the like and the differential operation of the brakes for steering by the rudder bar or other steering member comprises a T-shaped lever d adapted to engage the pistonrods c<1>, c<2> of the two brake systems and pivotally carried at d<1> by one arm e of a bellcrank the other arm e<1> of which is engaged by a roller g<1> on an arm g secured to the hand-lever f pivoted at f<1>. A pin e<2> on a link i connected to the rudder bar engages a slot in the member d so that after this member has been brought into contact with the piston-rods one or other of these may be depressed by movement of the rudder bar to apply one or other of the brakes. By further movement of the lever f both brakes may be applied or further applied whether or not the brakes are under the influence of the rudder bar. The arrangement is such that the leverage increases as the effort applied by the lever f increases. A reservoir n for making up fluid leakage losses in the brake system is connected through passages n<3>, n<4> and a plugcock o to the cylinders a<1>, a<2> which are connected respectively to the two brakes by pipes a<3>, a<4>. The cock o is closed by a spring when the brakes are applied and is opened by a projection on the lever f when that lever is in normal position. To limit the braking pressure that can be applied, passages p<1>, p<2> leading from the cylinders a<1>, a<2> to the reservoir are closed by ball-valves q<1>, q<2> acted upon by a common spring r through a member r<1>. The reservoir n has a piston n<1> which may be acted upon by a light spring n<2> and a stiffer spring s may also be provided to prevent the reservoir from being completely filled and thus allow space for the return of liquid expelled from the system through the ball-valves q<1>, q<2> when braking.
