Abstract
549,300. Fluid-pressure servomotor controlsystems. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., and EDGE, S. H. May 12, 1941, No. 6112. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] A servo device operated by fluid pressure has differential piston areas upon which the pressure fluid can act, the smaller area being always under pressure tending to maintain the piston inoperative until overcome by admission through a manually controlled valve of pressure fluid to act upon the larger piston area to transmit movement to the device which is under control. Fig. 1 shows a piston 6 at the end of its return stroke, with a rod 21 connected to a brake, clutch or other device. A skirt portion 25 of the piston 6 provides an annular space 24 in the cylinder 7 to which the fluid pressure reservoir 14 is connected so as always to exert pressure upon the piston annulus 22 and so provide a return force for the piston 6. Channels 16 open to space 24 supply pressure fluid through a valve 12 within the piston 6, to the chamber 20 at the back of the piston 6 to operate the brake &c. when the valve is opened by the action of a pedal 2 upon a hollow plunger 4, a port 9 of the plunger normally affording passage from space 20 to exhaust being closed by the end of the valve stem 10 at the beginning of the valve opening. In another construction shown in Fig. 3 the fluid pressure from a reservoir 40 exerts the returning force upon hollow extension 44 of the main piston 36 the controlling valve 34 being situated at the inner end of the extension 44. The piston 36 is connected to the operating rod 32 by a pivoted lever 30 connected to the piston rod 46.
