Abstract

1,242,128. Fluid operated actuator. GEORGE ENG. CO. Ltd. Nov.25, 1969 [Nov.26, 1968], No.56005/68. Heading F1P. A fluid operated actuator comprises a piston 14 slidable in an inner cylinder 12, an annular piston 13 slidable in the space between the inner cylinder 12 and an outer cylinder 11, a valve 9 controlling the supply of air to one or other of cylinder spaces 17, 19, and a valve 29 controlling the transfer of oil between cylinder spaces 16, 18 and thus the speed of the piston 14 and its output rod 15. During an extension stroke, oil leaving the cylinder space 18 flows through passages 27, 28, the open valve 29, a remotely operable locking valve 42 and then through a passage 45 into the cylinder space 16. A cam rod 39 attached to the piston rod 15 is arranged to close the valve 39 part way through the stroke. Closure of the valve 39 causes the oil transfer to take place through a restrictor 47 whereby the speed is reduced. The return stroke is performed at high speed since the valve 29 has a valve member 30 pushed back by the return oil flow.
