Abstract

929,861. Engine controls. R. ROBINSON. Sept. 18, 1959 [Sept. 18, 1958], No. 29974/58. Class 7(6). [Also in Group XXXI] A device which opposes movement in one direction only of a control pedal, e.g. accelerator, of an engine, e.g. a vehicle internal combustion engine, comprises a cylinder 7 pivottally or rigidly attached to the vehicle and carrying a sliding frame 1 attached at 2 to the control pedal. A piston 4 operates within the cylinder and is attached by a connecting rod 3 to the frame. A chamber 10a communicates with the cylinder 7 through port 9 and passage 8 controlled by a valve 10 acted upon by a spring 11, the pressure of which is adjustable by a screw 12. A fluid return passage 15 is provided and the piston 4 may be provided with a non-return valve or may otherwise allow passage of the fluid during the return stroke. Movement of the control pedal in an operative direction is only possible after the pressure necessary to open valve 10 has been exceeded. Alternatively, the cylinder may move with the pedal and the piston may be anchored to the vehicle. The piston rod may be reversed so that it works in a glanded lower end of the cylinder and the piston itself may incorporate a valve which would only open to allow liquid to pass when a predetermined pressure is applied to the piston, means being provided to allow leakage on the return stroke. In a modification, Fig. 7, the piston rod 3 is axially displaceable relatively to the frame 1 and is provided with a collar 17 so that displacement of the frame will displace the piston rod while being allowed to return freely. The piston may be in two parts 5 and 6 and a light spring loaded follower 18 may be provided.
