Abstract

864,508. Regulating. SMITH, H. C. June 8, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 19475/59. Class 7(6). An exhaust brake comprises a valve casing 10, Fig. 1, containing a slidable valve member 15 moved by a projection 18 which has adjustable means, such as lock nuts 22 and stop plate 23 engaging a fixed abutment 20, to limit movement of the valve member 15. The valve member is constrained in its "brake on" position by the springs 25 and may be of heat resistant plastic arranged to slide on fitted guide runners and shaped to scrape clean the inner surfaces of the members 11, 14. In Fig. 3, valve member 15 is moved by a piston 31, against the spring 33 by fluid or vacuum pressure and in Fig. 4 (not shown) the piston is double acting, vacuum or fluid pressure being applied according to the setting of a three-way valve controlled by the driver. In a modification, Fig. 2, the valve-rod 18 is attached to a piston 27 which, on movement of the valve rod into the "on" position, permits air to pass from an air clearer and manifold through ports 29 in the cylinder to the inlet manifold of the engine. In Fig. 5 the exhaust brake 42 (as in Fig. 3) is fed from a regulator valve 41 which is tapped off the air line 40 from the compressed air reservoir 38 and operates simultaneously with the wheel brakes by the application of the foot valve 39. In a further embodiment the application of air to the exhaust brake supplies compressed air to an extra cylinder which by means of a rod cuts off the fuel supply to a diesel engine.
