Abstract

678,476. Controlling motor vehicles. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. March 22, 1951 [May 26, 1950], No. 13337/50. Class 79(v) [Also in Group XXXIV] A vehicle braking system working by fluid pressure or vacuum is arranged so that depression of the brake pedal or the equivalent first closes the throttle and exhaust conduit and then applies the brakes. As shown in Fig. 1, on depression of brake pedal 1, valve 2 connects a source of fluid pressure 4 to cylinders 6, 9 and 10 containing spring-loaded pistons. The springs in pistons 9 and 10 are light springs so that pistons 11 and 12 are moved first. Movement of piston 11 causes the pedal 16 to move to its throttle to closed position, and movement of piston 12 closes the exhaust conduit 20. Further depression of the brake pedal displaces the piston in cylinder 6 against its heavier spring to apply the brakes. The arrangement is stated to be particularly suitable for diesel engines.
