Abstract

666,364. Hydraulic brakes. AKTIEBOLAGET KRISTENSON & GRAHS. Sept. 16, 1949 [Sept. 17, 1948], No. 23934/49. Class 103 (i). A hydraulic brake system, particularly for automotive vehicles, in which there is inserted between the master cylinder and the brake cylinders an intermediate cylinder in which the liquid is further compressed by a booster power cylinder mechanism, the piston of the intermediate cylinder being provided with a passage through which the master cylinder and brake cylinders communicate when the system is inoperative, is characterized by the provision on the pressure-rod of the booster piston of a surface which is arranged to engage a seating on the piston of the intermediate cylinder, the end surface of the rod simultaneously closing the passage in the piston. As shown, the booster piston is vacuumoperated, actuation of the pedal master cylinder displacing a plunger 33 by which a piston valve 34 is moved to place the booster cylinder 35 in communication with the engine intake manifold through a port 22; the port 21 communicates with atmosphere. Upon movement of the booster piston-rod 26 a conical surface 36 at its end engages a seating 37 in the piston 19 of the intermediate cylinder 11, the plane end surface 38 simultaneously closing the communicating passage 31. When the system is inoperative a direct connection is made between the pedal master cylinder and the brake cylinders by conduits 16, 18, the opening 31 in the piston 19, and a conduit 20. In a modification, Fig. 4, the seating surface 39 on the rod 26 is separated from the end surface 42 by a parallel portion of reduced diameter.
