Abstract

480,040. Brakes. RHEINMETALLBORSIG AKT. - GES. WERK BORSIG BERLIN-TEGEL, and GEISSEN, C. Nov. 25, 1936, No. 32263. [Class 103 (i)] A brake system for railway vehicles comprises a fluid resistance brake which is operative at high speeds only and a friction brake which is operative only at low speeds. As shown, the fluid resistance brake comprises a rotary pump 3 driven from the axle A and circulating oil through a duct that includes a throttle valve controlled by a piston in a compressed air cylinder 6 and a lever 5. The piston is backed by a spring so that the degree of closing of the throttle and thus of the braking action depends upon the pressure of the air supplied to the cylinder. The friction brake comprises brake shoes 2 operated by a cylinder 1. A change-over valve device comprises valves 13, 14 operated by pistons 17, 18, of unequal area and interconnected by a lever 21. The valve chambers are connected respectively by pipes 15, 16 to the cylinders 1, 6 and both to the main supply pipe 11. At high speeds, the chamber of piston 17 is connected by pipes 12, 20 and a speed governor controlled valve 10 to the pipe 11 and in these conditions compressed air supplied to pipe 11 is supplied to the chambers of both pistons 17, 18 so that valve 13 is moved to cut off cylinder 1 from the pipe 11 and connect it to atmosphere while valve 14 connects pipe 11 to cylinder 6 so that the fluid-resistance brake is applied. When the speed has fallen to a predetermined value, valve 10 is moved by the governor 9 to connect the chamber of the larger piston 17 to atmosphere as shown, so that the valves 13, 14 are moved by piston 18 to the position shown, to connect the cylinders 6, 1 respectively to atmosphere and to pipe 11 thereby rendering the fluid-resistance brake inoperative and tho friction brake operative. According to the Provisional Specification, the fluid-pressure of the fluid-resistance brake may be used to effect the change-over from that brake to the friction brake.
