Abstract

371,645. Fluid - pressure brakes. ELDERHORST, J. M., Stompwijk, Holland. May 22, 1931, No. 15208. Convention date, May 23, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] In a triple valve having a piston 2 influenced on one side by auxiliary reservoir pressure in the chamber 4 and on the other side by train pipe pressure in the chamber 3 and adapted to operate a slide valve 7 and having a piston 22 in a separate cylinder chamber 20 influenced by brake cylinder pressure in order that a graduated application and release may be obtained, the chamber 20 communicates with the triple valve chest, and the piston 22 extends with a bar 25 into the space of the triple valve chest which communicates with the train pipe and the chamber 20 communicates on the other side of the piston with the brake cylinder by a pipe 24. The piston 22 may comprise two or more coupled pistons of different diameter so that the brake may be applied in a number of different steps at the same decrease of train pipe pressure by controlling the connection of the pistons with the cylinder by means of a cock. Supplementary reservoirs may be connected to the auxiliary reservoirs by means of a cock to vary the braking power on loaded and unloaded vehicles. A valve 27 on the end of the bar 25 prevents leakage from the train pipe when the pressure therein is at a maximum. The piston 22 is adapted to be returned by a spring 21 and its right-hand side is connected to atmosphere. On fall of train pipe pressure a slide valve 10 is first moved by lugs 11 and then the slide valve 7 is moved to cut off the connections 12, 16 of brake cylinder 14 with the atmosphere and connect the brake cylinder by a passage 9 with the auxiliary reservoir 6. Rise of brake cylinder pressure acting on the piston 22 moves back the piston 2 and graduating slide valve 10 to cover the brake cylinder supply port 9 and thus obtain a lap position. On increase of train pipe pressure to release the brakes the pistons 2, 22 move to the right and'the brake cylinder and piston 22 are connected to atmosphere by passages 12, 16 until the pressure on the piston 22 has fallen to such an extent that the pistons and valves are moved back by the pressure on the right-hand side to obtain a lap position.
