Abstract

920,331. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. FISHER GOVERNOR CO. March 12, 1959 [March 12, 1958], No. 8606/59. Class 135. Control means for a valve 28 comprises a piston 20 under the control of a flapper F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> responsive to movements of a force motor FM, and a feed-back connection incorporating a cam 146 between the piston and the force motor. As shown, the flapper F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>, which has hardened, stainless steel buttons coacting with ball valves in nozzles N<SP>1</SP>, N<SP>2</SP> connected with the two ends of the cylinder 22 and with separate supply pumps P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP> for hydraulic fluid, is controlled by bellows B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> under the control of a pilot flapper PF<SP>1</SP>, PF<SP>2</SP> which is actuated by the force motor and controls nozzles PN<SP>1</SP>, PN<SP>2</SP> fed through restrictions R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> by a pump PP which shares a common driving motor PM with the pumps P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP>. The force motor may alternatively operate the flapper F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> directly and the piston 20 may be a spring-loaded, single-acting device in which case only one nozzle N<SP>1</SP> or N<SP>2</SP> is provided. Valves 80 opened against loading- springs by pressure from the pump PP isolate the piston 20 in the event of pressure failure and a valve 98 may be opened to interconnect the two sides of the piston 20 to permit manual operation. The force motor, as shown, consists of an annular coil 110 connected to the flapper by an arm 60 and movable in an annular gap between poles 104, 106, the coil being fed by an amplifier EAC under the control of a rheostat 168 controlled by an element 166 responsive to the pressure at the outlet of the valve 28. The arm 60 carries an inertia weight (not shown) to reduce instability in the system. The force motor may alternatively be pneumatic. The feed-back cam 146 acts on the arm 60 through a roller 144 mounted on a lever 134 and a spring 132. An adjustable bias spring 120 may also act on the arm 60. In a practical embodiment the flappers are pivotally mounted by metal strips and the piston 20, flappers, and pumps &c. are housed in an oil reservoir. The force motor and feed-back arrangement are housed in a removable cover. A leakage collection and discharge chamber 152 is provided below the cylinder for the piston 20, and the stem 16 of the valve 28 carries an indicator.
