Abstract

The fuel flow from the pump (10) is controlled by the lever (12) which in turn is controlled by the centrifugal governor (13, 14) so that increasing speed reduces the flow. The lever (12) is also connected by the tension spring (15) to the rod (16) of the piston damper (17). The piston damper is operated by the lever (23) which is connected to the vehicle accelerator pedal. Fluid is supplied through the non-return valve (25) into the cylinder (18). When the accelerator pedal is initially depressed the motion of the piston is opposed by the fluid which can only escape through the hole (26) and a small groove in the piston (17). When the piston uncovers the hole (26) the flow resistance decreases sharply.
