Abstract
1399813 I C engine valve gear; regulating INNOVATION & TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 5 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49826/71 Heading FIB [Also in Division F2] A unit 2 for transmitting motion from a member, e.g. a cam 22, 22a, to a member to be reciprocated, e.g. an engine inlet valve 26 or push-rod, comprises a piston 16 reciprocable in a cylinder 10 which is reciprocable in a cylinder 4. Liquid introduced into the spaces B and C between the piston 16 and cylinder 10 and the cylinders 6 and 10, respectively, may escape through passages 28, 32 and 38, 42. The liquid, e.g. oil pumped from the engine sump, is fed through non-return valves 48 and 50 to the spaces B and C and escape is controlled by a valve 56 and co-operation of the piston ports 40 with the cylinder 10, respectively. The valve 56 may be an adjustable orifice valve or spring-biased valve set to open above a predetermined pressure in the space B. In operation, with the valve 56 closed, the cylinder 10 moves upwardly with the piston 16 and downwardly, due to the force exerted by a return spring associated with the member being reciprocated, at a rate dependent upon the flow of liquid through the piston passages 38, 42 from the space C. With the valve 56 open, the cylinder 10 moves upwardly with the piston 16 but to a lesser extent dependent upon the degree of opening of the valve and moves downwardly when the piston has moved downwardly sufficiently to open the ports 40. In a further embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown), the cam 22, 22a contacts a lever (70) pivotally connected to an engine cylinder head (74) and a lever (80) pivotally connected to the piston 16, the unit 2 being mounted above the engine inlet valve 26 in the cylinder head. The valve 56 can be used as a speed regulator in addition to or in place of a carburetter throttle valve when the unit 2 operates an engine inlet valve 26.
