Abstract

891,490. Pistons. CASINI, C. R. April 10, 1958 [April 10, 1957; March 4, 1958], No. 11458/58. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] The compression pressure of an internalcombustion engine is maintained constant, irrespective of the throttle setting, by a compensating piston 11, Fig. 1, which is loaded by fluid pressure in two different stages. In Fig. 1 the piston 10 drives the engine shaft through cam gear 1 and is provided with a piston head 11 having an extension 11<SP>1</SP> sliding in a cylinder, formed in the main piston 10, which is connected by a flexible pipe 13 to a chamber 15 connected by valves 16, 18 to low- and highpressure fluid reservoirs 17, 19. During the compression stroke at part throttle operation the valve 16 is opened by cam 20 and the lowpressure fluid causes piston 11 to move upwards relative to piston 10 to compensate partially for the reduced charge. Just prior to top dead centre, valve 18 is opened and the high-pressure fluid from reservoir 19 moves piston 11 further upwards relative to piston 10. The cam 1 produces dwells in the piston motion at top and bottom dead centre. The cam roller 2 attached to the piston 10 is held in contact with cam 1 by fluid pressure acting on pistons 4, Fig. 3, attached by a gudgeon pin 6 to the piston 10.
