Abstract

The exhaust valve (1) has a piston (2) mounted on the push rod (3). The piston (2) is provided with sealing rings (4) and slides in a cylinder (5). The valve is normally held closed by a compression spring (6). The space above the surface of the piston (2) communicates with the combustion chamber (7). The pressure on the upper surface of the piston always balances the pressure on the lower face of the exhaust valve head (1). The camshaft then has only to supply a force sufficient to overcome the downward force exerted by the compression spring (6). This feature reduces the wear on the cam and on the gears driving the camshaft.
