Abstract

747,667. Valves. HINDMARCH, T. March 19, 1954 [March 19, 1953], No. 7665/53. Class 135. A pressure release valve comprises a cylinder 3 connected at or towards the lower end to a source of fluid pressure J and containing an inverted cup-shaped piston A with ports C in its side wall which co-operate with a groove D and exhaust port E in the cylinder wall, and the piston A is pressed downwards by a spring G which is located between the piston and an abutment member H, the cylinder and the abutment being relatively movable so as to adjust the working characteristic of the valve. As shown, the member H screws into the valve casing 1. In a modification, the member H comprises a piston working in a cylinder with a further loading spring located between the piston and the screw adjusting-member. Pressure fluid may be applied to the underside of the piston so as to lessen the pressure at which the relief valve opens. In a modification, the last mentioned piston abuts at its upper end against an adjusting screw, and the loading fluid is applied to the upper surface of the piston through a metering valve and a non- return valve in parallel. Abutment screws limit the amount by which the loading piston can be moved towards the valve. The valve may be loaded by a series of springs which come into operation sequentially.
