Abstract

762,197. Pressure-relieving devices for fluid. EMCO BRASS MFG. CO., Ltd. Dec. 30, 1954 [Jan. 11, 1954], No. 792/54. Class 135. A hydraylic surge arrester comprises a cylinder 1 mounted vertically on a pipe-line and in which a piston 5 moves against a spring 10 in response to pressure surges in the pipeline, the cylinder being divided into two chambers communicating with each other, the lower one containing hydraulic fluid and valve means 17, 18 connected with the piston so as to processively throttle the communication between the chambers and restricts the movement of hydraulic fluid from the lower chamber to compress air in the upper chamber. The needle valve has portions 17, 18 which produce different rates of throttling. To aid the return of the piston after a large pressure surge bleed holes 20 may be provided in a partition 8 containing the passage 7 joining the chambers or the passage or needle valve may be fluted for this purpose. The top of the cylinder carries an hydraulic fluid filling plug 14, an air valve 15 and a pressure gauge 16.
