Abstract
1,044,102. Hydro-pneumatic suspension units. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. March 16, 1965 [March 25, 1964], No. 11079/65. Heading F2S. In a self-levelling hydro-pneumatic spring suspension element during normal amplitude vibrations of a differential piston 2 in a working cylinder 1 damping is obtained as liquid flows to and from a gas spring chamber 6, 29 through cylinder openings 19 and between upper and lower cylinder chambers through piston ports 20 controlled by a valve 39 the plunger 14 of a pump, connected to the piston 2, working in a cylinder in a pump body 7 to suck liquid past a one-way valve 27 and through a pipe 28 communicating with a reservoir 16 in the upper end of the suspension element and pump it past a one-way valve 25 in the body 7 into a highpressure accumulator 9, 13. Pumping ceases, so that over pressure in the accumulator 9, 13 is avoided, when a separating piston 34 in the reservoir descends sufficiently to abut a spring ring 33. Excessively large strokes of the piston cause the head of the piston 2 to abut a spring 22 which, through a pin 23, opens the valve 24 so that liquid from the high-pressure accumulator 9, 13 flows into the working cylinder 1, and a port 21 in the cylinder to communicate with a port 32 in the reservoir so that fluid can flow from the working cylinder space back to the reservoir 16. One-way valves 11, 17, 31 allow gas under pressure to be supplied to the high-pressure accumulator 9, 13, the gas spring 6, 29, and the-reservoir 16, 30. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston port 21 opens directly into the reservoir 16, 30, the same resilient diaphragm 36, 37 being used for both the gas spring 6, 29 and the reservoir 16, 30. An apertured wall 35 in the reservoir provides a stop for the diaphragm 37 to limit withdrawal of fluid by the pump 7, 14.
