741,901. Dashpots. ETABLISSEMENTS NEYRPIC. Aug. 5, 1953, No. 21666/53. Class 108 (3). A dash-pot comprises a passage or passages 49 (Fig. 4) connecting the cylinder spaces 42a, 42b on either side of a piston 41, a compressed air chamber 56 in fluid communication with the cylinder, and means for decreasing the crosssectional area of the passage or passages 49, such that the resistance to movement of the piston 41, is directly proportional to its displacement in the cylinder 42. As shown in Fig. 4, a metering rod 43 obturates a sharp-edged orifice 49 in a plate 46 secured to the piston 41. The orifice leads via ports 47 and 45 to the piston rod side of the piston. Liquid displaced by entry of the piston rod passes into. the chamber 56 to compress air which serves to return the piston to its original position. The chamber 56 has a pressure gauge 58 and a safety valve 59. In Fig. 6, the piston progressively cuts off sharpedged orifices 63. The deflection-load characteristic of the devices is linear and the ratio of final to initial load may be 2: 3. The invention is applicable to fendering ships.
