Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A rail vehicle buffer or draw gear comprises a cylinder 10 and a plunger 12 slidable therein which displaces liquid from a compression chamber 29 through a valve 31 to a reservoir chamber 28 which is subjected to a recoil pressure exerted on a floating piston by pressurized air in chamber 27, the valve including members 42 and 37 movable together to allow liquid to pass between the chambers 29 and 28 through an annular space 46 and passages 45 and wherein the area of those members subjected to the liquid pressure in chamber 29 to open the valve is relatively less than the area subjected to the liquid pressure in chamber 28 to close the valve, there being provided in a volume 35 of the valve compressed gas which at all times provides a constant force to open the valve so that the relation of this force to the valve closing force decreases as the pressure in the reservoir chamber increases. The compressed gas in volume 35 may be replaced by coil springs or spring washers. The flow of liquid between chambers 29 and 28 is metered by a tapered pin 16 which co-operates with an aperture 15 in the end face 14 of the plunger.
