With a spring-urged piston 2 elevated in its cylinder 1, as shown, a hollow reduced-diameter extension 4 of the hollow piston rod 32 abuts a spring-loaded valve 9 and positions it to place chambers 35 and 36 in communication so that compressed air flows via a valve 14 and chambers 35, 36 to an operating cylinder 18 e.g. of an ironing and pressing machine. Some air flows from chamber 36 through an adjustable needle valve 21 to the cylinder space 20 above the piston 2 until the pressure therein is sufficient to lower the piston 2 in opposition to its spring 5 whereby the valve 9 seats to close off communication between chambers 35, 36 and connect the cylinder 18 to vent via the piston rod 32, piston 2, and ports 29, 30. To reset the apparatus, the valve 14 is operated to vent the space 20 through a check valve 22 whereupon the parts return to the positions shown. The needle valve 21 may be replaced by a slide valve with different sized ports therethrough. The value of the space 20 may be increased by one or more reservoirs 24. The time of the cycle may be varied by adjusting the needle or slide valve, and/or the loading of the pistons spring; the latter is effected by a member 8 screwed on to the cylinder 1, which cylinder is provided with a time scale 31.
