Abstract

768,698. Liquid springs. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. April 12, 1955 [May 5, 1954], No. 13160/54. Class 108(3). A shock absorber comprises a cylinder completely filled with liquid in which works a plunger 23 carrying a damping head 25, and having ports 46, 47, connecting opposed sides of the head 25, and a control member 48 for the ports 46, 47, such as to afford, " linear " damping to slow loadyielding movements of the plunger, and a greater rate of damping for more rapid load-yielding movements. The control member 48 comprises spaced pistons 40, 53 operating in a con centric bore 45 of the plunger 23 disposec between the ports 46 47. The control mem ber 48 also carries a valve head 41 which is loaded by the action of a spring 52 to seat in the mouth of the port 47. The head 41 is formed with ports 61 covered by a valve plate 43 under the action of a spring 44. In operation, on slow compression movement, the valve plate 43 is lifted against the action of the spring 44 and liquid flows through the ports 61 with, " linear " damping. The liquid then flows through ports 50 in the piston 40 of the control member 48 and out through ports 46 to the space below the damping piston 25. On more rapid compression movement, the control member 48 is moved downwardly against the pressure of the spring 52 and damping flow occurs through the ports 50 according to a " square law." On rebound, liquid flows from below the piston 25 to above, via ports 54, under the control of a non-return valve formed by a coiled strip 55. A cylinder 20 is filled with liquid at super-atmospheric pressure through a screw plug 60. The invention may be applied to a helicopter undercarriage similar to that described in Specification 745,915.
