Abstract

1411218 Shock absorbers with hydraulic end stops JONAS WOODHEAD Ltd 22 Dec 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 44668/71 Heading F2S The terminal portion of the extension stroke of a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber is damped. The shock absorber has two passages extending from the annular chamber above the piston to the chamber below the piston, the first passage 11, 14, 15, 18, 19 extending from an opening 13 in the piston-rod 3, through the piston-rod to the chamber below the piston, and containing a valve element 20; and the second passage 27, 28, 26, 15, 18, 19 extending from an opening 29 in the annular chamber below the first passage opening 13, and containing a valve 30 which opens only after the opening 13 in the piston-rod 3 passes into the piston-rod guide 4. On compression (bump) movements, a valve element 9 in the piston opens to allow flow from below to above the piston. On extension (rebound) movements, when the piston is in the central region of the cylinder, liquid flows from above to below the piston through the first passage 11 and past the opened valve element 20. At the limit of extension movement the first passage opening 13 is covered by the piston-rod guide 4 (as shown) and so pressure above the piston builds up, until it opens the second passage valve element 30 and then the main valve element 20.
