Abstract

A tube-within-a-tube hydropneumatic shock absorber, of the kind in which the gas is situated above liquid in the outer tube, is characterized by the nature of the means which allowliquidleakage from the inner tube past the piston-rod to the outer tube whilst preventing gas from the outer tube entering the inner tube. This means includes a valve element, as shown a simple 0-ring 19, which is located in a recess 16 within the sealing means 12, 13 of the two tubes. This recess is required to be radially spaced from the piston-rod 8 so that the valve element does not engage the moving rod. The flow path from the inner to the outer tube is by way of the annular space 20 between the piston-rod and the sealing member 12, the passages 17 and the passage 18.
