Abstract

A shock absorber has an auxiliary cylinder and an auxiliary piston. The auxiliary cylinder is located at the piston-rod end of the shock absorber's main cylinder the auxiliary piston is slidably mounted on the piston-rod of the main piston and is provided with at least one axial slot through which the passage of fluid is prevented when the main piston forces the auxiliary piston into the auxiliary cylinder and a projecting ring on the piston-rod is provided to engage the auxiliary piston. In an embodiment a shock absorber has telescoping tubes 5 and 6, the former having an end cap 7 with an attaching member 8 attached thereto and the latter being closed by a cap 12 connected to an attaching member 13. The cap 7 supports a piston-rod 9 which has a twoway valved piston 23 slidable in a cylinder 11. The latter forms an annular reservoir 10 with the tube 6 is connected to an auxiliary cylinder 72 which is also connected to a piston-rod guide 16 has a helical baffle 62 therein for eliminating turbulent flow and is secured to a head 44 of a double-acting valve 43. The auxiliary cylinder 72 receives an auxiliary piston 65 when the latter is raised by the upward movement of the piston 23, the auxiliary piston 65 being slidably mounted on the pistonrod 9. Cushioning of the piston 23 is therefore effected by means of fluid flowing between the adjacent walls of the auxiliary cylinder 72 and the auxiliary piston 65. When the piston 9 moves downwardly the auxiliary piston 65 remains in the auxiliary cylinder 72 until a ring 67, which is mounted in an annular slot 68 in the piston-rod 9, engages a slot 70 formed in the auxiliary piston 65. Before the ring 67 engages the slot 70, however, a washer 32, which is positioned between the pistons 23, 65, is forced from engagement with the piston 65 by means of a shoulder 34 of the piston-rod 9 and fluid is allowed to pass, through passages 69 in the auxiliary-piston 65, to the auxiliary cylinder 72, thus releasing the auxiliary piston 65 therefrom. In embodiments, cushioning is effected when the auxiliary piston forces fluid from the auxiliary cylinder into ball valves located in passages formed in the piston-rod guide 16 when fluid passes through additional apertures formed in the auxiliary piston 65 and when fluid passes through triangular slots in the peripheral wall of the auxiliary piston 65.
